Is this the new Generation of O'Reilly Book Covers?
Mapping Hacks
Schuyler Erle, Rich Gibson, Jo Walsh
While it took me nearly 4 SECONDS to think things through (I know, its amazing how things like this can practically paralize a person leaving them totally and completely helpless, as if "frozen" in time while the body and mind adapts to its new surroundings... What I could accomplish if I had those 4 seconds back... ')
Ummmm.. the point (if any) of the above paragraph of "blah...blah...blahbble"?
While definitely something you immediatelly notice when you see, for the first time, the cover of "Mapping Hacks
", O'Reillys latest entry in the "Hacks" namespace, it doesnt take long at all to adjust and realize that, while I wouldn't expect this to replace the animals any time soon, this is REALLY COOL and worthy of an encore performance for the next Hacks entry in which use an objective representation for the cover as opposed to the typical animal cover we have all come to love and appreciate while at the same time attempt Yet Again to make any real direct connection beyond the next animal on the list (anyone have any insider knowledge they would like to share regarding animal selection for a typical O'Reilly animal title?)
Either way, I'M DIGGIN' THIS BOOK COVER! And the content is even BETTER and TOTALLY not what I thought it would be... definitely a must have

The animals will be here for a long while to come. We had a hard time reconciling the color interior of Mapping Hacks with the originally two-color Hacks cover, and went for something more… exciting.
Web Mapping Illustrated is kind of a surprise book in this regard - an animal on the cover, and a 4-color interior.
I’m glad you liked the content of Mapping Hacks as well as the cover!

Thanks for the added insite and reassurance that our dependency on O’Reilly to keep us intrigued by Yet Another Species We’ve Never Seen or Heard of and Yet Still Find Things Just As They Should Be. I know I for one will sleep easier with this added comfort that alls well in animal land :)
Speaking of Web Mapping Illustrated… I have it in my hands as I type and without a doubt this is something that must be seen and felt (the glossy paperstock used for the 4 color process seems to be ready to take on the world in which its content portrays in VIVID detail… This is DEFINITELY more of a hackers delight style book for a hacking genre that seems to be coming back into the main stream of web development in a HUGE way. The timing of this book could not have possibly been better with the new MS Maps product due out soon and the infatuation that exists to hack Google Maps into something more suited for a visitors particular interests e.g. see http://www.busmonster.com/ for an example… GREAT STUFF!!!
I plan a post for this title as well just as soon as I have a chance to play with some of the tools and code that come (via links) with this title to aid your your map hacking adventures… More to come soon :)
